  • In this work, which consists of two essays titled The Disappointment of War and Our Relationship with Death, which he wrote in 1915, six months after the outbreak of the First World War, Sigmund Freud discusses his dissatisfaction and disappointment with human nature and society. Freud, who in the first attempt determined with disappointment that the ideal cultural atmosphere thought to have been achieved in Europe before the war, the utopian peace environment that was assumed to turn into a norm by the ability of different cultures to live together without any problems and the elimination of borders, was actually just a huge mirage, focused on the destruction caused by the war on people and culture. He states that by comparing the people considered primitive with the people, we still carry primitiveness within us and that the war brings this to light. It examines an illusion arising from the misjudgment of human predatory and cruel nature from an interdisciplinary perspective. In the second attempt, he focuses on man's relationship with death and how it is disrupted, and traces the changes in our perspective on death throughout history. He explains that with the spread of monotheistic religions, the inevitability of death, which has gained a completely different face than in ancient times, is completely erased from minds in times of peace, and while we reject our own death as unreal, the desire to kill continues to exist in our unconscious. If you want to endure life, prepare for death. Show more
