Or from that boy who took shelter under a shop awning and gnawed on the dry bread in his hand? Set in the fictional English town of Mugsborough in the late 1800s, the story deals with the working class' struggle for survival in hunger and misery. Robert Tressell, who is also from the working class, describes inequality in society, religious exploiters, distorted capitalist order and corrupt council members in his semi-autobiographical work, Naked Philanthropists. In the novel, which also includes humorous elements, the author calls them philanthropists and makes a reference to the bosses who exploit them, at the expense of their own lives, and the workers who remain silent.
