Collections & Anthologies Editorial Review
"Spirits Abroad: Stories" is a collection of 19 short stories that explore the boundaries between the earth and the supernatural, featuring Malay cultural myths. The stories are varied in their tone, ranging from humorous to sad, and include body horror, vampiric living, surrealist cross-London transformation and inspirational enlightenment. The collection has an eclectic and modern theme while all stories feel part of the same universe. The First Witch of Damansara, The House of Aunts, Balik Kampung, One Day Travel Card For Fairyland, Rising Lion-The Lion Bows, The Perseverance of Angela's Past Life, If at First You Don't Succeed... and The Earth Spirit's Favorite Anecdote all received a rating of 5-star while The Four Generations of Chang E received a rating of 2-star. Although the collection may feel incomplete with a lot of self-exploration of cultural myths, it is a thought-provoking and great source for discussion. Overall, Spirits Abroad is an excellent combination of humor and serious commentary on Asian dysphoria, successfully incorporating fantasy and folklore.
