General Editorial Review
The book "Equality: The Impossible Quest" by Martin van Creveld provides a comprehensive discussion of various forms of equality and how they contradict each other. The book examines political, legal, economic, racial and gender equality, and argues that making people equal in every respect would require a police state without parallel in history. Creveld uses historical examples to support his arguments, but fails to clarify the senses of equality he is describing. The author also drifts into more problematic realms in the last third of the text, displaying biases against ways in which people seek equality. Overall, the book may be enlightening and provocative but may also raise questions or dissent to the author's view. The lack of an index is a drawback for a scholarly work of this breadth.
