Ravenous [Blu-ray]

**Editorial Review of Ravenous [Blu-ray]** "Ravenous" brings an unconventional twist to the horror-comedy genre, presenting an intriguing blend of humor and horror woven into a period setting shortly after the Mexican-American War. Despite being steeped in themes of cannibalism—a well-trodden horror concept—the film distinguishes itself by exploring the Wendigo myths, providing a fresh perspective on Consumption and survival. The film's characters, particularly Captain Boyd, played by Guy Pearce, bring a unique flavor to the narrative. Boyd’s portrayal of a cowardly hero adds an unexpected complexity to the story, straying from typical tropes in horror films where bravery reigns supreme. Visually, "Ravenous" impresses with its vivid depiction of 19th-century America, accomplished despite a modest budget of $12 million. The striking scenery adds to the film's atmospheric tension, enhancing its storytelling and emotional weight. Critics appreciate the cinematography and the engaging character dynamics, which often blend quirky humor with darker themes. However, the film is not without its flaws. Some moments of humor, while entertaining, disrupt the tension and pacing, particularly when incongruous music accompanies serious scenes. Moreover, the film's climax veers into somewhat predictable territory, falling into a conventional fight sequence that lacks the unpredictability that characterizes much of the preceding narrative. Overall, "Ravenous" defies typical horror conventions, offering a mix of clever writing, solid performances, and a unique thematic exploration. While it may not achieve universal acclaim, it is recommended for viewers keen on a different flavor of horror and those looking to expand their genre horizons. **
